Book Review // Mort by Terry Pratchett
Work has got busy which means less time for fun (booo). I did however manage to get through a book! So let's not waste time and move into the review.
Title: Mort (Death #1, Discworld #4).
Author: Terry Pratchett
Publisher: Corgi
Format: Paperback - Buy via my Amazon affiliate link
Page Count: 243 Pages
Commercial Fluff: In this Discworld installment, Death comes to Mort with an offer he can't refuse, especially since being, well, dead isn't compulsory. As Death's apprentice, he'll have free board and lodging, use of the company horse, and won't need time off for family funerals. The position is everything Mort thought he'd ever wanted until he discovers that this perfect job can be a killer in his love life.
Review:
This novel is fantastic! First, we finally meet Death and join him on his search for an apprentice. Here enters Mort, an awkward, gangly young boy with no prospect of a future. What happens next is a slight twist on a classic coming-of-age story. The development of the character Mort is handled well and makes the book. We have romance, adventure, awkwardness, humour and curry.
For me, this was the first book that had actual characters and character growth. We were introduced to a human Death, and Mort became a man. This would be my pick if I had to pick a starting point for a Discworld introduction. If you have not read this title, do yourself a favour and pick it up. You will not regret it.
