Slaine Lore and Miniatures
Introducing Sláine
Hailing from the mystical past realm of Tír na nÓg, Sláine mac Roth is a Celtic Barbarian, part of the Sessair Tribe. After being banished from his tribe, he travels the land as a lone wanderer, encountering dragons, monsters, dwarves and witches as he journeys through the world. He isn’t completely alone in his travels, however: not only does he carry a huge axe which he nicknames “Brainbiter”, but he also has mastery of “the warp spasm”! This primal force flows straight from the Earth into his body, warping his physical appearance and turning him into a hulking warrior.
Created by the then-married creative team of 2000 AD Creator Pat Mills and artist Angela Kincaid in 1983, Sláine has lived through many lives, his journey taking him from lone wanderer to High King of Ireland! One of 2000 AD’s most enduring and loved characters, he has been the centre for many of the greatest stories in the Prog’s history!
Tír na nÓg
The world Sláine wanders through is fantastical and filled with monsters, including the Fomorians, a race of sea demons who are an eternal enemy for the human tribes who live in constant of being permanently wiped out. They aren’t the only enemies who’ll cross paths with the Woad Warrior, however: after Sláine and his untrustworthy ally Ukko the Dwarf rescue a young woman from being burned alive in a sacrificial pyre, they learn that she wanted to be sacrificed in the name of her master: the ancient and powerful Lord Weird Slough Feg. He goes on to become Sláine’s most famous adversary!
The barbarian tribes of Tír na nÓg all worship Danu The Earth Goddess. One of the true constants in Sláine’s life, Danu doesn’t just watch over him but pushes him through time in order to defend Ireland from numerous threats as her champion. She rarely acts directly in such conflicts, but has on occasion possessed those around Sláine in order to get the job done…
Rise of a King
Despite being exiled from his home tribe for a dalliance with the Warrior Queen Niamh, Sláine eventually returns and becomes King of the Sessair. Although not yet united with his love – who in his absence has given birth to his son, Kai – he leads his tribe into battle against the Fomorians, seeking to unite all the tribes of Tír na nÓg into a single unstoppable force.
As Sláine takes on Lord Weird Slough Feg’s forces in a final desperate battle for ultimate control of the realm, will he be able to withstand the overwhelming opposition he faces – not just from the enemy, but from the other tribes? For the victor, the greatest prize of all: the title of The Horned God, the High King of Ireland!
