Comic Review: Batman's Mystery Casebook

I love the fact my youngest is enjoying superhero comics. It is the perfect excuse for me to pick up more and more of these light reads. And rediscover these favourite characters with him. Let's investigate this week's comic (technically a picture book, but close enough).

Title: Batman's Mystery Casebook

Author: Sholly Fisch

Illustrator: Christopher Uminga

Blurb: Have you ever needed help solving a mystery? Batman has!

Batman is a great detective, but he rarely works alone. His sidekicks, Robin and Batgirl, his butler Alfred, and the police of Gotham City all play a role in helping him keep his city safe. You can, too!

  • Look for clues!

  • Analyze evidence!

  • Solve riddles!

  • Learn history!

  • Help the Batman as he goes on his adventures, and see if you can spot the answers to these mysteries before he logs them into his casebook.

Format: 144 pages, Paperback

Review

It's a fun kids' book, possibly a bit too advanced for my youngest, but still made for a fun cuddle-time read. A character introduces each chapter, be it Batman, Batgirl or Robin, and within this introduction, we learn a little bit about the science behind forensics and investigation. One of the side effects of reading this title was that my child spent the rest of the day walking around with a magnifying glass (much to my enjoyment), pretending to solve the crime and seek out more clues.

The chapters are short and snappy, with a problem at the end for the kid to solve. Some of these are easily solved by examining the imagery; others are obvious if paying attention to the story. Sadly, it feels somewhat repetitive by the end, almost like the author ran out of ideas. But indeed a fun concept that kept my child engaged.

Recommend this to young readers.
