Audio Book // Alien Echo by Mira Grant

We have a double feature of Xenomorph action following Friday’s comic review. I also managed to complete this audio drama set in the Alienverse. Now, I had seen this title a few times but didn't believe it had anything to do with the series. But I was wrong. So I grabbed a copy from the and had a listen.

Title: Alien: Echo

Author: Mira Grant

Blurb: An original young adult novel of the Alien universe.

Olivia and her twin sister Viola have been dragged around the universe for as long as they can remember. Their parents, both xenobiologists, are always in high demand for their research into obscure alien biology.

Just settled on a new colony world, the sisters discover an alien threat unlike anything they’ve ever seen. Suddenly, their world is ripped apart.

On the run from terrifying aliens, Olivia’s knowledge of xenobiology and determination to protect her sister is her only weapon as the colony collapses into chaos. But then a shocking family secret opens—one that’s as horrifying to Olivia as the aliens surrounding them.

The creatures infiltrate the rich wildlife in this virgin colony world—and quickly start adapting. Olivia will have to adjust, too, if she will survive...

Review

Well, this is a teaching moment. This title on looks alone seemed like something other than a Xenomorph read. Boy, was I wrong! It turns out it was a very enjoyable listen, and I should have tried it sooner. The story starts like many young adult books. A teenager is forced to move around, a new school, new bullies and the classic teenage crush scenario. The family seems loving but focused on the sick twin, who can't leave the house while ignoring the healthy child, which sucks.

Just as things are turning around a ship appears in space and soon all hell has broken loose on the planet. It's at this point that we dive into the horror of a Xenomorph story, and it is pretty damn epic. I'm not going to lie. It is like 90% of all alien stories and stays within the safe formula of what works. But that is why I enjoy reading and escaping into them. Mira Grant does a great job of hooking you into the lives of the teenage sisters.

I want to avoid spoilers, so it's best to stop there. But it's worth the price for the alien fans. Don’t judge a story by the cover.
