Comic Review - Superman an Origin Story

While checking out the graphic novel section on the library's kid floor, my son found some DC Superhero origin stories, so we had to grab them. I have mentioned this before, but I have always struggled with Superman. He rarely can be beaten, so the lack of threat and danger ruins it. All heroes need weaknesses; saying his "humanity" is his doesn't cut it. But let's see if his Origin Story can warm me to the man of steel.

Review

Now we have a couple of these, so the initial pick was up to the kid, and of course, he goes for Superman. Strangely, I rather enjoyed it. It used the 90s cartoons as the theme, you know, the ones, the slightly dark, adult themes threaded throughout them. These are the ones we all still love today but maybe wouldn't show our kids. True classics!

It hits all the key points, which was nice to see, and my three-going 4-year-old loved the vibrant and bright art. As I read, it sparked his questions, and he sat excitedly looking at the pictures for a long time. The best part is that they include a glossary at the end of the book, explaining some of the more complicated terms and meanings; you don't have to be a Superman expert to enjoy the story.

I can't fault it as a young reader's picture book. It explained Superman wonderfully and sparked the kid's imagination. So I have to recommend it. Did it warm me to Superman? No. The dude still bores me.

Cheers for reading!
