Comic Review - Lawman of the Future 07
Moving swiftly on with our Lawman of the Future reviews, we come to issue 07. The cover is dominated by Judge Dredd being held by Robotic arms and the bold text - “Guilty?” written above it. Finally, we might hit this verse’s version of the robot wars! Alongside this, we get told there is a chance to win a CD audio drama and claim a free T-shirt (what is with all the free stuff?). Should have spent the budget on more stories, ha.
The first tale will explain the cover, so jump in.
Tale Revolt of the Robots: - This time, Judge Dredd is in the deep end. All across Mega-City One, droids are starting to revolt against their human masters, and it is up to Judge Dredd to work out what is going on. With the assistance of his trusty robot housekeeper, Judge Dredd manages to locate the ringleader of the droid revolt. He needs to stay alive long enough to bring them to justice.
That is a pretty good take. It doesn't hold up as well as the traditional telling of the tale, but it's a classic Wagner-take to confront social injustices.
The next page is not that exciting. It showcases different droids found throughout MC-1 and the roles they play within the futuristic city. A two-page spread of an ABC warrior Droid poster closely followed this. Based on The Hammerstein droids used by President Booth in his failing years of government. This one made it into the film and made for an excellent villain. I am also highly excited for the ABC Warriors to be made into a skirmish game by Warlord Games in late 2023.
Quake Part 2: When we last saw Judge Dredd, he attempted to rescue citizens from a collapsing tower as Quake struck once more. With a race against the clock before another building crumbles, Judge Dredd heads to the Undercity. Soon, Judge Dredd tracks down the villain, and it turns out he was an ordinary citizen replaced by droids. Suffering from depression, he attempts to prove he is better than a droid, but it has become the thing he hates most.
This story was okay but lacked the depth I wanted from a two-parter.
Then, some dull readers’ letters and drawings. I understand it is aimed at kids, but come on, give us an article! We also get the hint that Judge Death is in the next comic. I'm excited to see how this series deals with such a superfiend!
Death Hunt Part 1 - As a citizen, most of your day is boring. If lucky, you may have a hobby like Batgliding or dishwashing. But if you are one of the fortunate citizens, you might find yourself the next selected victim of the Hunt Club. The Hunt Club is a bunch of wannabe killers who randomly choose a citizen to hunt and kill while rich guys bet on it. Lucky for our citizens, Judge Dredd is nearby to lend a saving hand.
With that, issue 7 is done. I'm not going to lie. It was a very underwhelming issue. The stories lacked purpose or depth. The filler articles added nothing for the reader, and I'm willing to state this was the weakest issue yet.
I hope issue 8 is more action-packed especially with the appearance of Judge Death. I hope they make him extra creepy and give us what we need! Until next time, cheers for reading.
