Review
The story follows Chaplain Grimaldus of the Black Templars as he’s tasked with defending the Hive city of Helsreach on the planet Armageddon. Oh, and by protecting, I mean holding the line against an insane Ork invasion, complete with giant war machines, explosions everywhere, and the kind of chaos that makes an 80s action movie look tame. To make matters worse, Grimaldus doesn’t even want to be there and sees the mission as punishment as he and his brother are separated from the main forces.
What makes Helsreach unique as a novel is that it’s not just about killing Orks (although there’s plenty of that). It’s also about what it means to be a hero in a world without hope. Grimaldus is a fascinating character—he’s tough as nails, but you also get to witness his doubts, fears, and the intense pressure he’s under to be this unshakable symbol of faith and the living will of the Emperor. The side characters are great, too, from the fellow Space Marines to the everyday humans trying to survive in the middle of this nightmare. Dembski-Bowden does a great job of showing how even the most minor acts of courage matter when everything’s falling apart.
But of course, we would be doing the title a disservice if we didn’t discuss the battle scenes because they are something else. The way the author describes the siege of Helsreach is so vivid. It’s intense, every fight feels like it matters, and the stakes are always sky-high. One wrong move will cause the defence to crumble and fail. Underneath the bolter fire and explosions is a story about faith—faith in your brothers-in-arms, your mission, and sometimes just faith that you can make it through the next hour. It’s about defiance, too, where you stand tall even when the odds are so bad you might as well laugh. It’s inspiring in a dark, “everything is terrible, but we’re still here” kind of way.
Helsreach is an absolute blast to read. It’s action-packed, emotionally gripping, and surprisingly thought-provoking. Whether you’re a longtime Warhammer fan or just dipping your toes into the universe, this is a great pick. Aaron Dembski-Bowden absolutely nails the grimdark vibe while still delivering a story with heart.
